An oil painting on canvas titled The Mews by listed American artist William Benecke (1934-2001). The work features a street scene that takes place in Vancouver, Canda. Depicted is the brick courtyard of the historic building ’Gaoler’s Mews’. Signed by the artist to the lower right. A pair of W.T. Burger informational labels and gallery stamp are present to the verso. Presented beneath a beige linen mat, housed in a gesso frame with a gilt and silver tone finish.
William Benecke was born in 1934 in Chicago, Illinois and received his formal art training at the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked as an illustrator for several major studios in Chicago and also worked as a staff illustrator for the Chicago Tribune and the Sun Times. At age 24, he emigrated to Mexico for ten years, during which time he painted and ran his own gallery. He is known for his landscapes, garden scenes and portraits.
