Arthur Helwig Original Coastal Oil Painting on Board
Item Details
An original oil painting on board by well-listed Cincinnati artist Arthur Louis Helwig (1899-1976). The painting depicts a coastal scene scattered with curious objects. A man stands near a sailboat along the water’s edge, and a piece of fence, an anchor, and a wooden chest can be seen strewn across the sand. A stone wall stands along the left margin, and brightly-colored homes rise behind it. The painting is signed in red to the lower right. It is presented in a wooden frame with cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire.
Helwig was an active artist for over four decades and an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy. During this period he exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and across the United States. He was president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1939 to 1941. Helwig studied under Theodore Dorl, Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkins. He worked in watercolor, oils, and numerous printing methods and was also a well-known mural painter. His works are housed at The Cincinnati Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, The Philadelphia Museum and The Cleveland Art Museum.
