Large Hand-Knotted Kazak Area Rug
Item Details
A large Kazak tribal area rug. This wool and camel-hair rug is hand-knotted in a markedly abrashed palette of azure blue, sapphire, rose, pink, and ivory. It begins with a rose-colored memling medallion with large palmette pendants at top and bottom. The medallion encloses a memling-like motif in sapphire; both rest on an ivory memling lozenge, which, in turn, rests on a sapphire and azure field. The rug is woven with clear delineation between elements; filler motifs include florets, X shapes, diamonds, and tree of life forms. The field is framed by three borders, including a main border grounded in ivory and filled with hooked diamonds, which enclose cruciform shapes. The main border is flanked by East Anatolian-style key-patterned minor borders. Selvedges are triple overcast. Ends finish with short brown kilim skirts and tan warp fringe made of camel hair and wool. Unlabeled.
