An oil painting on canvas board of a ship at sea by E. Wheat. This piece depicts the open water at dusk, orange light casting a boat and the waves in front of it into shadow. The boat has five sails on the mast, and tilts with the waves as it cuts through the water. The sky above is full of clouds from the horizon that begin to break just near the top of the composition. It is signed to the lower right corner and presented in a wood frame with wire for hanging.
Condition
- painting has shifted in frame; painting would benefit from a cleaning; lower left corner has very small areas of paint loss; water marks on verso; frame has surface wear; some chips and color loss; mitered corners have slightly separated; liner has scuff marks along bottom edge.
