Two Vintage African Kuba Cloth Hand Woven Raffia Panels
Item Details
A pair of vintage African Kuba cloth panels from the Congo Republic. The distinctively graphic panels are hand woven by Bakuba men using vegetable dyed raffia palm leaves on hand looms, Bakuba women embroider the panels, each panel a unique work of art. Traditionally, the versatile cloth was used for clothing, mats and even currency. Both panels in natural tans and browns are a complex pattern of both flat weaving and cut fibers, one in a diamond pattern and the other chevron rows.
