Peter Max Mixed Media on Canvas "The Tyler Davidson Fountain"
Item Details
An acrylic painting and serigraph print on canvas titled _ The Tyler Davidson Fountain_ by famed psychedelic pop artist Peter Max (American, b. 1937), executed in 2002. The painting was originally gifted to the City of Cincinnati and received by Mayor Charlie Luken. Max gifted these when he was in town for a show at the Malton Gallery. One is Max’s take on Cindy Woo, the runaway cow, and the other is of the Tyler Davidson Fountain. Luken had both paintings in his office for quite some time.
In the center of the composition is a facsimile of the monumental cast bronze Tyler Davidson Fountain, the city of Cincinnati’s proclaimed symbol. The image is encompassed by bold linear planes of vibrant color in Max’s defined ‘cosmic’ style. Signed in paint to the lower right. Personalized to the verso, ‘for the city of Cincinnati with love, Peter Max 2002.’ Stamped below the personalization with a black stamp and catalogue number 90783. Included is an appraisal from Malton Gallery in 2007 and a photocopied Peter Max Original Art Certificate. Presented without glass, float mounted in a wood panel frame.
Peter Max was born in Berlin, Germany in 1937. He moved with his family to China when he was young and would spend many of his early years there. Max and his family spent years moving around living in such locations as Israel, Tibet and in areas throughout Africa and Europe. When he finally arrived in America with his family, Max studied in New York at the Pratt Institue, the Art Students Leage, and the School of Visual Arts. Max was a visionary in the 1960s with his unique cosmic style, vibrant colors, and designs that would become a staple of pop art. His list of achievements and commissions range from global exhibitions and shows to portraits of several American presidents.
