South American Arpillera "Cosecha"

Item Details

A South American arpillera piece titled Cosecha (Harvest). Arpilleras are patchwork applique and embroidered textiles originating in Chile, but contemporary arpilleras are also made in Peru and Columbia as a mean of earning money for women in poor shantytowns and villages. This arpillera depicts the rolling hills of farmland in the mountains with livestock and fields of crops. Three dimensional figures are affixed to the work in the midst of harvesting their stuffed crop. One woman sits weaving on a backstrap loom and another spins yarn to the right. The title is stitched in the sky to the upper center. It is mounted on a yellow backing, behind glass, in a black frame with sawtooth brackets for hanging.
