Original paper folders for the prints are present to the verso.

Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris, France in 1896 and raised in Tokyo from an early age. His father was employed by the Japanese government to teach french to young aristocrats. Jacoulet quickly became fluent in the Japanese language and social customs studying a number of traditional arts. As a young man he studied woodblock printmaking under Shizuya Fujikake, a style he would excel in for many years. He is best known for his striking portraits of the South East Asian natives utilizing the traditional Japanese ukiyo-e style and a mix of his own unique printmaking methods.
