A 1939 oil painting on canvas by artist August Allemow. The maritime landscape piece depicts a 19th-century clipper ship under partial sail, with small figures shown aboard the bow and stern. Seagulls surround the vessel as it makes its way through choppy waters against an overcast twilight sky. The work is signed and dated in cream paint to the lower right. It is presented without glass in a wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- overall surface wear, scratching and craquelure to canvas, with some areas of paint loss; stretcher is beginning to separate from the rest of the frame; surface wear and scratching to frame; joints are beginning to separate at corners; toning and wear to canvas verso; no backing paper present.
