A watercolor painting and ink drawing on paper titled Yacht ‘America’, as rigged in 1900 by James Archibald Mitchell III (American, b. 1932). Depicted is a a sailing yacht, America as it appeared in 1900 cutting through the waves with its bow. The muted earthen tones and pale blues give the painting an antique feel reminiscent of ca. 1900 Currier & Ives prints. Presented under glass, housed in a brown and black wood frame.

James Archibald Mitchell III was born on June 21, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland and studied with Frank Riley at the Art Students League in New York City. He is for his marine paintings featuring historical yachts and sailing ships and New England landscapes. A former member of the Coast Guard and survivor of two shipwrecks, Mitchell’s maritime motifs stem from personal experiences.
