Semi-Antique Hand-Knotted Persian Afshar Tribal Area Rug
Item Details
A semi-antique Persian Afshar area rug. This tribal wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of dark madder red, black, midnight blue, and ivory. It features a highly detailed symmetrical design beginning with three hexagonal pole medallions grounded in midnight blue. These rest on a contoured lozenge grounded in black, on a madder red field. Both the lozenge and field are densely populated with peacocks, chickens, phaesants, four legged animals, pinwheels, flowering plants, and other symbolic motifs. Framing the field are twelve densely patterned borders, including an unusual primary meandering floral border over ivory, with flowers rendered in patches of different colors. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with brown and white warp fringe made of goat hair and wool. The rug is unlabeled.
