Vintage Hand-Knotted Chinese Floral Area Rug

A vintage hand-knotted Chinese floral area rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of pale gold, purple, pink, sapphire, and taupe. It features an allover floral pattern over a pale gold field. The pattern consists of stylized, rectilinear vinework with purple and pink flowers, blue and green foliage, and butterflies placed at intervals throughout the field. Framing the field are three borders. These include an inner border grounded in terracotta, with widely spaced florets, a primary border in which the pattern and colors of the field are repeated at scale, and an outer guard border of taupe. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at one end with a short kilim skirt and wool warp fringe and at the other with a kilim skirt and shorn fringe. The rug is unmarked.
