Simon Gribelin Hand-Colored Engraving "Hercules Rejects Pleasure and Chuses Virtue"

A hand-colored engraving on paper titled Hercules Rejects Pleasure and Chuses Virtue by French engraver Simon Gribelin (1661-1733). This image depicts the Roman hero Hercules leaning against a post and listening to the figure of Virtue explain to him his duties, holding a sword and with a helmet at her feet. At his feet and looking up at him is the figure of Pleasure, dressed in seductive clothes with silks hung from a tree behind her. Hercules pays no attention to her. Below the image is a coat of arms and an inscription of the title and artist’s name in both English and Latin, and a dedication to ‘the Right Honorable Anthony Ashley Cooper Earl of Shaftsbury &c. 1713’. The piece is presented with a mat, behind glass, and in a gold tone frame that is wired for hanging.
Condition
- to fair; toning to print; wear to all edges of print, the bottom left edge is torn off; tear to lower right; folds diagonal across lower right; stains and foxing throughout; slight tearing to paper on verso.
