The Ohio State University Marching Band Gray Baton

Item Details

A gray baton from The Ohio State University Marching Band. The little-known story of the gray baton is shared between two great rival bands and lives in band lore and tradition of ‘The Best Damn Band In The Land!’. The gray baton has been used by the Drum Major of The Ohio State University Marching Band since 1975 and is handmade by alumnae John C. Gray and inscribed with ’ Go Bucks! Beat Blue!’ .The Gray Baton was adopted by The University of Michigan’s very own Drum Major and a call was put in by him in the early 1990s to John Gray about purchasing a gray baton. So he sent one baton free of charge , but with one stipulation. John was to provide all of the bands batons with inscription ‘Go Bucks! Beat Blue!’. He convinced the reluctant Michigan Drum Major that the engraving could be hidden by maize and blue tape, as taping was done frequently by drum majors to indicate balancing points. So an agreement was made and consequently from that day forward, each baton used contains this engraving. Letter of Authenticity is included.
