A mixed media sculpture titled RICTVS from the Par.a.dise series by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2007. The piece is comprised of two charcoal drawings with acrylic embellishments on paper of a scull and the distorted portrait of a male figure; overlapped by branches painted in blue acrylic. There is an informational label affixed to one of the branches of the sculpture.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
