A Japanese yakusha-e woodblock print on paper. Featured is Peony (Botan): Actor Kawarazaki Sanshô (Gonjūrō I) as Danjūrō no Shichi (団十郎の七 河原崎三, 初代河原崎権十郎) by listed Japanese artist Toyohara Kunichika (豊原 国周, 1835–1900) and published by Yorozuya Zentarō (Manzen). The print depicts kabuki actor Kawarazaki Sanshô in a blue patterned robe set against a background of peonies. It originates from the artist’s series titled Thirty-Six Selected Flowers and Grasses (Sanjūrokkasō No Uchi, 三十六花草の内 牡丹). The work features black calligraphy with artist and date seals to the outer margins, as well as a red ‘O’ seal to the lower left. It is matted in off-white and presented under glass in a wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso. The frame backing includes a mid-century label with information about the work.
