A mixed media sculpture titled Liselotte by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2007. This work features a three-quarter view portrait drawn in charcoal on foam board; the portrait is obscured with a web of tree branches cascading down the right side and covered in acrylic paint of various vibrant colors. A descriptive label to the verso provides the artist, title, medium, and dimensions of the work.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation, the bulk of his focus being mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
