A mixed media sculpture titled New Game in Town from the Distopia Series by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2007. The piece is comprised of an abstracted face rendered with gestural brushstrokes and covered with painted tree branches. To the verso of the sculpture, an informational label is affixed.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
