Frank Kowing Mixed Media Sculpture "From the Notebk"

A mixed media sculpture titled From the Notebk by Maryland-based artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), created in 2007. From the artist’s Canoe of Fate Series, this mixed media assemblage features a canoe shape composed of painted canvas and webs of tied painted branches and sticks. A printed sketch of a worried face with bats coming out of its head is mounted at the top end of the sculpture. Handwriting on an attached label provides the title, date, and dimensions of the work.

Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. He is known for his mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
