An antique hand-colored engraving on paper by Dutch artist Jan Kip (1653 – 1722), created after a work by listed Dutch artist Leonard Knijff (1650 – 1721). The 18th-century image, titled The Tower of London, Commanded in Chief by the Rt. Honble. Robert Ld. Lucas, originates as Plate 7 from a printing of Britannia Illustrata, a collaboration between Knijff and Kip first published in 1707. The piece is titled below the image, centered around a medallion with a coat of arms. The print includes several additional notations printed in plate to the lower margins of ‘L. Knyff. Delin., I. Kip. Sculp., La Tour de Londres, 7’. It is matted in off-white and presented under glass in a wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- print is in Good to Fair condition with toning, foxing and fading with age; crease to center; frame is in Poor condition with water damage and wood decay to left side; overall surface wear, scratches and nicks throughout rest of frame; tears and water stains to backing paper
