Semi-Antique Hand-Knotted Khamseh or Qashqai Tribal Area Rug

Item Details

A semi-antique tribal area rug likely from the Khamseh or Qashqai. This wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of burgundy, red, black, indigo, and ivory. It begins with a large stepped medallion grounded in black and enclosing two smaller medallions, all of which rest on a red field. Each corner of the field contains an indigo-colored boteh framed in a serrated box. Filler motifs include eight-point stars, eight-lobed florets, stylized palmettes, eyes, and split oak leaves. The field is framed by compound borders, including a Arab-style meandering split leaf border over ivory and tulip patterns over burgundy. Selvedges are single overcast, the rug finishing at each end with undyed warp fringe made of goat hair. The fringe is very short at one end. Unlabeled.
