Vintage United States Steel Mill Control Panel by Joseph Hensel

Item Details

A vintage United States Steel mill push-button control panel by Joseph Hensel. The panel is marked with switches for ‘Weld’, ‘Power’ and ‘Rotation Speed’ and push buttons for ‘Head Out’, ‘Head In’ and ‘Head Stop’. Green and red lights are at the top of the panel.Multiple color-coded wires are attached to the back of the panel and to the box marked ‘Clamp’. A metal tag connected to the wires is marked ‘LGP’. The panel once saw use at the United States Steel mill in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and has been salvaged to now serve as a piece of steampunk or industrial decorative art.

Based out of Pennsylvania, Joseph Hensel creates re-purposed works of art from original industrial artifacts. Wooden molds for metal machine castings, old electrical equipment, and lighting are salvaged and transformed into both functional and aesthetic creations such as clocks, tables, lighting fixtures, and more. He not only breathes new life into pieces from America’s industrial golden age, but also provides connections to their past by documenting the pieces’ original homes and by providing copies of company manufacturing records as ‘birth certificates’ when available.
