Re-purposed Vintage Foundry Mold Wall Clock by Joseph Hensel

Item Details

A re-purposed vintage foundry mold that has been crafted into a working wall clock by Joseph Hensel. Crafted from an original wooden foundry mold sourced from the Bethlehem Steel plant in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the clock features a raised center and outer rim with recessed brown tone basin to which is impressed, and marked ‘Chain Sheave 40 In Blooming Mill’. The number ‘50’ that has been hand carved on to the rim represents the weight of the sand cast, cast iron sheave that this pattern yielded. The original plant log indicates that this mold was carved on May 27, 1920 and the resulting cast iron sheave would have been utilized at the Franklin Plant operation. A copy of this information is included as provenance for this piece.

Based out of Pennsylvania, Joseph Hensel creates re-purposed works of art from original industrial artifacts. Wooden molds for metal machine castings, old electrical equipment, and lighting are salvaged and transformed into both functional and aesthetic creations such as clocks, tables, lighting fixtures, and more. He not only breathes new life into pieces from America’s industrial golden age, but also provides connections to their past by documenting the pieces’ original homes and by providing copies of company manufacturing records as ‘birth certificates’ when available.
