Martin Rettig Original 1906 Oil Floral Still Life on Canvas
Item Details
An antique original oil painting on canvas by well-listed painter and Rookwood Pottery decorator Martin Rettig (Cincinnati; 1869 – 1956). The floral still life painting, typical of Rettig’s body of work, depicts a bouquet of white hydrangeas arranged in a metal stein, placed on a subtly reflective blue table. Artist signature and date are signed in paint to the lower right. The painting is signed to the lower right; housed in a newer wooden frame with a brushed gold tone finish, equipped to hang.
Rettig studied with prolific painter Frank Duveneck and shared a studio space with Henry Farny in his early painting career, and was president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1918 – 1920.
Condition
- accretion across painting surface. Isolated areas of inpainting throughout negative spaces of bouquet and sporadically throughout backdrop. Painting was varnished after inpainting.
