An oil painting on panel by an anonymous artist. The piece is a copy work after a circa 1546 Eastern Orthodox icon of the crucifixion by Theophanes the Cretan; the original is a painted fresco at Stavronikita Monastery in Greece. The image depicts Christ to the center, with his mother Mary in blue robes to the left and John the Apostle in green and orange robes to the right. The work is rendered against a vibrant gold tone background and is presented without glass in an arched wooden frame with embossed foliate and twisted column details to the front. The frame verso includes a handwritten note of ‘To Bruce, from Demetrios, with all my prayers, Oct 4, ’98’.
Condition
- wear to frame finish; painting would benefit from light cleaning; no hanging hardware present; hole to frame backing.
