Hand-Knotted Contemporary Persian Area Rug
Item Details
A contemporary Persian area rug. This wool rug, possibly Bakshaish, is hand-knotted in a palette of rust, deep midnight blue, taupe, and cream. It features a freehand tribal design beginning with a hexagonal medallion over a rust-colored field. The medallion encloses a system of concentric rectangles surrounded by smaller diamonds and rectangular boxes. Lining the inner border of the field are partial diamonds and hexagons. The field is framed by a highly stylized, curvilinear herati main border, which is grounded in abrashed midnight blue. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short tan wool warp fringe. Blue weft threads are visible on the underside. It is labeled ‘Made in Iran’ on the reverse.
