An oil painting on canvas by listed Massachusetts artist Emily Burling Waite (1887-1980). The work depicts an older woman with white hair gathered to the top of her head in a bun. She is shown seated in a patterned high back chair wearing a black dress with lace detail at the neck, jeweled brooch and gold chain in her right hand. The unframed canvas is unsigned.

Massachusetts artist Emily Burling Waite is best known for her oil portraits, etchings and still-life paintings. When she passed away in 1980, her son locked up her art studio in Worcester and rented out the house. When he died in 2013, the studio’s contents became available to the public – work that spans nearly 80 years, from art schools she attended in her youth to the last year of her life.

- work is presented unframed on stretched canvas, some buckling to canvas where frame was previously; wear to canvas, especially at edges; discoloration to canvas verso.
