A Persian Shirvan area rug. This wool tribal rug is hand-knotted in a palette of cranberry and indigo. It begins with a central square panel grounded in cranberry, with mihrab-like points at top and bottom, enclosing a constellation of flowers and abstract geometric motifs in teal, shades of brown, blues, and pinks. The panel rests on a sapphire-colored lozenge with pendants at top and bottom, the lozenge, in turn, resting on a cranberry-colored field, with notched edges and an implied sapphire field beneath. The lozenge and field are populated with rectilinear, stylized palmettes, trees, floretes, and leaves. Framing the field is a single meandering floral border over burgundy. The underside reveals undyed tan weft threads. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with variegated wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
