A mixed media sculpture from the Sheild series by artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), completed in 2005. This work depicts a chaotic composition rendered with primary colors in acrylic, wood, paint brushes, and other found items. It is signed to the verso and wood plank to the lower left. Additional inscription to the verso indicates series and date.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
