A mixed media sculpture titled Canoe of Fate by artist Frank Kowing (1944-2016), completed in 2008. It is from the Par-a-dis/HMS series. This work depicts an abstract composition of a canoe with bold inscriptions rendered with acrylic, wood, and other found items. While the item is not signed, it comes directly from the artist’s estate. Please note that this item does not come with a certificate of authentication or provenance.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
