A mixed media sculpture titled Danielle by Maryland outsider artist Frank Kowing (American, 1944-2016), created in 2008. The piece is comprised of overlapping branches covered in orange and yellow acrylic. The sculpture bears the charcoal portrait of a young woman rendered on foam board, attached to the lower area of the structure. To the verso of the sculpture, an informational label is affixed. The item remains unframed.
Frank Kowing is an outsider artist based in Maryland with a larger than life reputation. The bulk of his focus is mixed media works, many grand in scale and with three dimensional quality. He has participated in a vast array of group shows and exhibits since his first shows in the 1970’s in New York City. His education, after service in Vietnam with the US Army, was extensive and included the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and several fine art institutions in Pennsylvania.
