Early 20th Century Victor/Victrola Floor Model XI Turntable in Mahogany Cabinet

Item Details

An early 20th century Victor/Victrola Floor Model XI turntable in its original mahogany cabinet. This piece features a hinged top lid over a fully functional turntable with a 12’ platter lined with green felt and a nickel-plated tone arm. The interior lid is emblazoned with the Victrola logo, reading ‘Victrola; manufactured by Victor Talking Machine Co., Camden, N.J., U.S.A.’, and a second beneath reading ‘From Krausgill Piano Co., Louisville’s Most Complete Music House, 309 W. Walnut St.’ A serial number plate on the inside identifies the model number, and the serial number traces the manufacturing date to April of 1917. The detachable crank provides power to the fully functional two-spring phonograph motor; the device was tested with some of the 78 rpm records elsewhere in this sale. In the center of the cabinet are two doors that open to a vented sound chamber, used to increase or decrease the volume. A lower set of doors open to reveal eight shelves for horizontal record storage. The entire cabinet rests on short cabriole legs with casters. This piece also includes several spare styluses, some in vintage Victrola tins.

Founded in 1901, the Victor Talking Machine Company began producing the Victrola Model XI turntable as a tabletop model in 1910, expanding into a floor model two years later. The Model XI established itself as Victrola’s most popular model before being replaced by the VV-100 in 1921.
