Lorence F. Bjorklund Ink Illustration on Paper "Gunsmoke Tribute"

An ink illustration on paper titled Gunsmoke Tribute by listed artist Lorence F. Bjorklund (New York, 1911 – 1978). The work is initialed by the artist to the lower left corner. Under the image is a graphite inscription giving the title, caption, and pagination for the Western pulp publication the image illustrated. ‘Drop the gun! The man whispered in the doorway commanded in a sibilant whisper.’ The illustration is mounted onto a layer of white mat board and covered with a single layer of matting.

Born in Minnesota, Bjorklund was known for his Western genre scenes. Bjorklund earned his first education in art as an apprentice to a mural painter and drawing lessons from his father. In 1927, he received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute. During this time, he illustrated Western genre pulp publications. Throughout his career, his illustrations were published in over 300 books, including some that Bjorklund authored. He is listed in the 1975 book Fifty Great Western Illustrators by Jeff Dykes.

- minor wear to the corner of the mats; yellowing and discoloration to the paper.
