A hand-knotted area rug. This Iranian-made wool rug is rendered in a palette of pumpkin, cream, and shades of blue. It begins with a long, octagonal notched medallion, which is grounded in midnight blue and encloses a smaller medallion as well as cruciform shapes, depictions of four-legged creatures, and other tribal-style motifs. The medallion rests on a partly open pumpkin-colored field, which is populated with depictions of animals and ewers, amid ram’s horn, arrow, and other motifs. Framing the field are several borders. These include a wide primary border, which features alternating panels grounded in cream and containing boteh, tree forms, or notched checkerboards. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at top and bottom with ivory wool warp fringe. It is labeled “Hand Made in Iran” on the reverse.
- the fringe has been clipped short in one area; there are some loose warp threads.
- approximately 7.7’ W x 10.2’ D.
