An ink illustration on heavy paper titled Gun Ghosts from Boothill by well-listed American artist Lorence F. Bjorklund (1911-1978). The work illustrates an scene for a ‘Western Story Magazine’. Depicted is an armed group of man with a prisoner crossing through a log bridge situated among abrupt territories. The work is signed by the artist to the lower right of the composition. A graphite inscription is present the lower right stating that this illustration was created to be used in the page 25 of Western Story Magazine. A stamp reading ‘L. F. Bjorklund Croton Fallen N. Y’ is adhered to the verso. The item remains unframed.
Born in Minnesota, Bjorklund was known for his Western genre scenes. Bjorklund earned his first education in art as an apprentice to a mural painter and drawing lessons from his father. In 1927, he received a scholarship to study art at the Pratt Institute. During this time, he illustrated Western genre pulp publications. Throughout his career, his illustrations were published in over 300 books, including some that Bjorklund authored. He is listed in the 1975 book Fifty Great Western Illustrators by Jeff Dykes.
