Attributed to George Shepherd Watercolor Painting on Paper "Millers-Thumb aka Bull-Head"

Item Details

A watercolor painting on paper titled Millers-Thumb aka Bull-head (Two Fish) attributed to well-listed British artist George Sidney Shepherd (1784-1862), created circa 1816. The work illustrates in fine detail a Millers-Thumb aka Bullhead Fish (Cottus gobio). Rendered from an upward and downward perspective. Unsigned by the artist. An informational gallery label is affixed to the lower right of the glass. The painting is presented within an off-white mat, housed under glass in a gilt wood frame.

George Sidney Shepherd is known for his topographical watercolor paintings of the English countryside. Shepherd received his early art education at the Dr. Cox Macro’s Sketching Academy and later was a founding member of the New Society of Painters in Watercolors which was initially formed due to the Royal Academies refusal to recognize watercolor as an important contribution to art.
