An 1886 watercolor and gouache painting on paper by French academic painting Jean-Baptiste Édouard Detaille (1848-1912). This depicts an elegantly turned out man, dressed in the traditional red coat and polished boots, upon his sleek chesnut horse that walks in profile. The work is dated and signed in the bottom right with a personal dedication A mon cher ami Gonzagne (To my dear friend Gonzague), possibly for his contemporary Gonzague Privat. It is housed in a sand mat with a gilt liner, and presented under glass in a gold tone wooden frame that is wired for hanging.

- slight and even toning to paper.
