1881 "Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings" First Edition
Item Details
An 1881 hardcover first edition, second printing copy of Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings by Joel Chandler Harris. Harris, a journalist working in Atlanta in the post-Reconstruction period, collected a number of songs and folk tales from African American oral traditions. The stories include the well-known Br’er Rabbit trickster character among others. Although considered offensive by some modern readers due to its stereotyped characters and use of exaggerated dialect, others consider it valuable for preserving parts of an authentic Southern black folk tradition. Some later adaptations such as Disney’s Song of the South (1946) were eventually pulled from distribution due to these controversies. It is illustrated with steel plate engravings. Published by D. Appleton & Company of New York.
