Vintage Handcrafted West African Malian Dogon Peul Mask
Item Details
A vintage West African Dogon Peul mask, attributed to the West African Malian Dogon. It features a light blue beaded trim along the woven central crown and red, orange, and brown woven plant fibers; likely jute or grass, fringe at the base. The sides are a woven mesh, with long, hand-braded fringe suspended from the crown. The crown is flanked on either side by white shells, with shell decoration to the chin flaps on either side at the base. Unlabeled.
Dogon masks are generally representative of animals, and are used in various rituals and are used in ‘masquerading traditions’, where only the most senior members of the spiritual event are able to explain the complex meanings of the various mask styles.
