Item Details
A hand-knotted kashmar pictorial area rug with inscriptions. This wool rug begins with a central star medallion with phases in rose, cerulean, ivory, and sapphire. The medallion rests on a midnight blue field filled with crisply rendered bowls, vases, palmettes, lancet leaves, vines, and flowers; a quartet of notches punctuating the field contain inscriptions in Farsi. The spandrels each contain a pair of sarus cranes in flight over a cerulean ground, amid flowers and vines. The universal palette is cerulean, midnight blue, ivory, and deep red. Framing the field are five resolved floral borders. These include a major border filled with vase forms amid floral and foliate arabesques. Minor borders contain meandering florals, flanked by an outer guard border of midnight blue. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short ivory cotton warp fringe. There is a small tag in Farsi stapled to the reverse; otherwise the rug is unmarked.
