19th-Century A. Long Oil Painting on Canvas Rustic Landscape
Item Details
An oil painting on canvas of a rustic landscape, signed ‘A. Long’ and dated circa 1855. This work features a rocky waterfall surrounded by boulders, overgrown foliage and trees. A rustic shack sits to the left of the waterfall where a couple villagers are dwarfed by the vast landscape. Mountains are faintly visible in the background against a cloudy blue sky. The painting is signed to the lower right. It is presented in an ornate Louis XV style gilt and gesso frame. A descriptive label from W.T. Burger Company is present to the verso. The artist’s name and circa date are also handwritten to the frame verso.

- signs of large spots of in-painting throughout entire composition; painting has been relined with canvas; scuffs and paint loss throughout upper edge of painting; craquelure throughout; faint scratch present along lower right edge; chip in lower right edge of frame molding; wear in frame includes, small chips, scratches, small cracks, stains, and discoloration throughout; remnants of descriptive labels to verso; stains throughout canvas verso.
