A Balinese style Barong mask. In Balinese mythology, Barong is the lion-like king of the spirits. This mask depicts the mythological figure with large eyes and ears, red skin, and a long black beard. He wears a crown and has a mane of a swirling gold tone that is adorned with glass beads and mirrors. A wooden hinge and handles on the back allow for the lower jaw to open and close, and a wool rope is present for use or hanging. This piece pairs with lot number 17NYC058-039.
