1844 "Description of China and its Inhabitants"
Item Details
An antique hardcover copy of The Chinese: a General Description of China and its Inhabitants by John Francis Davis, Esq., British governor of Hong Kong, published 1844 by Charles Knight & Co. of London, Volume I of III only. The work covers the interactions between Europeans and Chinese, and a brief summary of Chinese geography, history, and government. Hong Kong was transferred to British control following the First Opium War (1839-1842), and this work provides some insight into the British perspective on the conflict in the chapters on Chinese-British relations. The volume is illustrated with steel engravings and bound in a marbled hardcover with partial leather veneers.
Condition
- light cover wear and normal paper yellowing, and front hinge is somewhat loose, but overall quite good considering age. Interior is clean, bindings are good.
