After Mitsuoki Tosa Woodblock Prints on Paper "A Furier" and "A Bow-Maker"

A pair of woodblock prints on paper titled A Furier and A Bow-Maker, from the series A Collection of Pictures of Artisans, after paintings by Japanese artist Tosa Mitsuoki (土佐 光起) (1617-1691). A Furier depicts a building with a cutaway, revealing workers producing clothing, boots, gloves, and other military supplies. A Bow-Maker depicts a similar workshop and composition, with men bending and finishing wood for bows. There are biographies of the artist affixed to the versos of both pieces, with no apparent signatures, publisher’s stamps, or censor’s seals. Each print is presented under off-white mats and museum glass, in faux-bamboo frames with hanging wire to the versos.

Condition

- edge wear to both frames; one frame is damaged to the upper left corner, and is temporarily held together with painter’s tape; toning to both mats; discoloration from possible water damage to both prints.
