First Edition Middle Reader Books With Additional Classic Titles

A collection of books for the middle reader including a first edition. The first edition entitled Freckles, written by Gene Stratton-Porter, was published by Doubleday, Page & Company of New York. The copyright date of 1904 is stated on the title page in Roman numerals ‘MCMIV’ and published ‘October 1904’ on the copyright page. The volume is bound in brown cloth with an illustrated front cover, the top text edges are gilt, the fore and bottom edges are untrimmed, and has a frontispiece. The illustrator for the full page and in-text drawings is E. Stetson Crawford. Additional volumes are Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett (Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1926) with full page color plates and pen drawings by Reginald Birch and The Beasts Of Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs (A.L. Burt Company, New York, 1916) with illustrations by J. Allen St. John. Two volumes published by Grosset & Dunlap of New York are Grimm’s Fairy Tales by The Brothers Grimm with illustrations that includes full color endpapers by Fritz Kredel and Andersen’s Fairy Tales written by Hans Christian Andersen and illustrated by Arthur Szyk. Each is bound in a cloth cover with a pasted down cover illustration.
