"New York Herald" from the Assassination of Lincoln
Item Details
A copy of the New York Herald newspaper dated April 15th, 1865, the day after President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. The article on the assassination, written in the immediate aftermath of the event, can only tentatively identify Booth as the assassin based on eyewitness reports, and note that the injuries sustained by Secretary of State Seward were likely not mortal (he did in fact survive). An ‘Extra’ dated from the morning of the 15th confirms Lincoln’s death. In addition to the article on the assassination, the issue also contains reprints of articles and dispatches, including some from Southern papers and sources, dated earlier in April, about the fall of Richmond, Jefferson Davis’ flight to Danville, and his speech urging his remaining followers to continue the war effort. There are also dispatches from reporters accompanying the army of Grant on the surrender of Lee and his army at Appomattox. Apart from the capture of Booth on April 24th, and the capture of Davis on May 10th, the major events of the closing days of the Civil War are reported here. It is presented in a plastic sleeve.
