Handwoven Turkish "Scorpion and Ram" Tribal Kilim
Item Details
A handwoven Turkish tribal kilim. This densely patterned wool area rug is woven in a variegated palette of red, cerulean, navy blue, and gold. It begins with two hexagonal lozenges, each featuring a scorpion medallion at the center. Dividing the lozenges is a horizontal, crenellated panel containing two scorpions, the scorpion symbolizing protection. The lozenges rest on a red field, which is populated with numerous depictions of rams, symbolizing strength, amid boteh, fetter motifs, and other symbolic elements. Framing the field is a wraparound crenellated border grounded in celadon and filled with scorpions. This is flanked at the rug’s top and bottom by horizontal panels grounded in gold and filled with Ashik Ersari guls in different colors. Selvedges are double overcast, while top and bottom of the rug finish with long wool warp fringe wrapped in yarns of different colors. The rug is unlabeled.
