Handwoven Turkish "Scorpion" Area Kilim
Item Details
A handwoven Turkish kilim. This wool area rug is woven in an abrashed palette of red, sapphire, ivory, camel, and butter. It begins with two very large stepped star medallions, each grounded in sapphire and enclosing a large scorpion motif, which, in turn encloses an Ashik Ersari gul. The medallions rest on a red field, which is punctuated by tribal motifs including wolf’s mouths. Framing the field is a single wide crenellated border, which is grounded in camel and populated with fetter medallions in sapphire and red or pink. Scorpion motifs are said to symolize protection, fetters marriage. Selvedges are double overcast, while top and bottom finish with knotted ivory wool warp fringe. The rug is unlabeled.
