Hand-Knotted East Anatolian Area Rug

Item Details

A carved and hand-knotted east Anatolian area rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of rose, cerulean, deep midnight blue, and ivory. This rug features a complex rectilinear deisgn beginning with three polygons at the center of an abrashed, rose-colored field. Each polygon encloses curled S motifs as well as pinwheels and/or diamonds; each polygon also features curled hooks extending on stems into the field. The field is populated with a constellation of shields and motifs, which include stars, S shapes, minor polygon shapes with curled extensions, geometric rosettes, and stylized, curled oak leaves. Framing the field are compound borders, including a major border featuring a Shirvan-style bracket motif over an ivory ground. Selvedges are overcast. The rug finishes at top and bottom with kilim skirts in cerulean, ivory, and red; these have been embellished with raised rings of fiber in tan and brown. Long ivory wool warp fringe, some of it braided, some of it loose extends from the ends. The rug is tagged with a metal numerical bracket. Otherwise, it is unlabeled.
