A 1969 oil painting on board by listed artist and British television personality Jonathan Routh (1927-2008). The piece, titled Nun With Crutch, depicts a mysterious scene set under blue skies inside a California Spanish mission. A nun in black clothing can be seen to the lower right, leaning against a tan mission wall and holding a crutch above her head, as an unsuspecting bishop prepares to enter a door next to her, presumably about to be attacked. The work is signed and dated in faded black ink to lower right. It is presented without glass in a gold tone wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso. The frame backing includes information about the artist, title and date, with a black-and-white print of the painted image affixed to the verso. - to Fair; stains and debris to painted surface; light wear to frame finish; stains, wear, toning and foxing to paper items adhered to frame backing; painting would benefit from light cleaning.
